The next day Karly and me are back at the park bench, sitting in the warm afternoon as the squirrels search for nuts and the birds chirp happily. I rest my head on her shoulder, thinking about how lucky I am to have such an amazing woman in my life.

“So how does it feel to be twenty-two?” she asks. “I remember it being alright for me. Twenty-two is a pretty solid age.”

I smile. “It’s great.”

“That’s quite the change in attitude you’ve got there.” Karly replies. “You’ve been dreading turning twenty-two for the last year, I’m surprised you haven’t already gotten to work dreading twenty three.”

“I don’t know.” I say, looking up into the branches that crisscross the sky above us. “I think I’ve got a pretty good thing going on here. I’ve got a good job, an amazing partner, it’s not so bad.”

Karly recoils in shock. “I can’t believe I’m hearing what I’m hearing!” she says. “What have you done with my girlfriend?”

“Well,” I say, beaming. “Now that I how good birthdays can be, I’ve got something to look forward to next year.”

“Who says you’ll have to wait until next year.” Karly responds with a grin. “We’ve got an anniversary coming up!”
